The 15-Minute Website Conversion Audit Every Owner Should Run

The 15-Minute Website Conversion Audit Every Owner Should Run

Short answer: a website loses leads when it's slow, unclear, hard to use on a phone or makes visitors work to contact you. This 10-point check finds those leaks in about 15 minutes.

Grab your phone, not your laptop. Most of your visitors are on mobile, so that's where the audit counts.

Points 1–3: first impressions

1. Does it load fast? Open your site on your phone using cellular data. If you're waiting, so are your customers, and many won't wait.

2. Is it clear in five seconds? A stranger should know what you do, where you do it and why you're different without scrolling.

3. Is there one obvious next step? A clear button to call, book or get a quote should be visible right away.

Points 4–6: trust

4. Real reviews, visible early. Put your best reviews near the top, not buried on a separate page.

5. Real photos and video. Stock photos make you look like everyone else. Real work and real people build trust fast.

6. Proof of credibility. Years in business, notable work, awards or guarantees you can actually stand behind.

Points 7–8: contact

7. Can I call with one tap? Your phone number should be tappable on mobile and visible on every page.

8. Is the form short? Ask only what you need to follow up. Every extra field loses people.

Then test it: submit your own form and call your own number. Make sure someone, or something, responds fast.

Points 9–10: tracking and follow-up

9. Do you know where leads come from? Calls and forms should be tracked by source, so you know which marketing works.

10. Does every lead get an instant response? An automatic text or email in seconds keeps people from calling the next business on the list.

Bonus check: walk the customer path

Pretend you're a brand-new customer who's never heard of you. Search for your main service, click through to your site and try to book.

Notice every moment you hesitate, hunt for information or feel unsure. Each of those moments loses real customers every day.

  • Did the page you landed on match what you searched for?
  • Could you find pricing or at least a price range?
  • Was it obvious what would happen after you submitted the form?

Ask someone who's never seen your site to do the same thing while you watch. Their confusion is your to-do list.

Score yourself

  • 9–10: your site is working hard. Focus on driving more traffic.
  • 6–8: fix the misses and you'll likely see more leads from the same traffic.
  • 5 or less: your website is probably the biggest leak in your marketing.

Fix the cheapest wins first

Some fixes take minutes: a tappable phone number, a shorter form, reviews moved higher. Do those today.

Bigger fixes like speed and design take longer, and they pay off for years. Google's PageSpeed Insights shows you exactly what's slowing your site down.

Why this matters more than more traffic

Sending more visitors to a site that leaks leads just leaks more of them. Fixing conversion multiplies everything else you spend on marketing.

Where most sites fail

In my experience, the most common misses are slow mobile load times, no clear call to action at the top, and contact forms nobody responds to quickly.

All three are fixable, and fixing them often produces more leads without spending another dollar on traffic.

Run the full audit again after each fix. Watching your score climb, and your leads with it, is the best motivation to keep going.

Quick answers

How often should I check? Every quarter, and any time you change your site.

Do I need a new website? Not always. Many sites need fixes, not a rebuild.

What's a good conversion rate? It varies by industry. Track yours over time and improve it.
