Google AI Overviews: How to Get Your Business Mentioned in the AI Answer

Google AI Overviews: How to Get Your Business Mentioned in the AI Answer

Short answer: Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear above the regular search results for many questions. To get your business mentioned, you need clear answers on your site, strong signals of trust like reviews, and structured data that helps Google understand what you do.

I check search results on my phone constantly, usually from somewhere with a better view than a desk. Lately, the first thing I see is often an AI answer, not a list of links.

What AI Overviews change

For years, the goal was ranking in the top few links. Now, for many questions, there's an AI summary above those links.

Google describes how these summaries work in its Search Central documentation. The summary links to the sources it draws from.

That means there's a new prize: being one of the sources the answer cites.

What makes a site worth citing

AI answers pull from pages that answer questions clearly and come from businesses that look trustworthy. That's good news, because both are things you control.

  • Direct answers. Put a clear, one or two sentence answer near the top of the page, then explain.
  • Real expertise. Show who's behind the business and why they know what they're talking about.
  • Specific service pages. One clear page per service beats one vague page that lists everything.
  • Fresh, accurate information. Hours, prices, service areas and contact details that match everywhere.

Structured data helps machines understand you

Structured data, also called schema markup, is a small block of code that labels your business details. It tells search engines exactly what your business is, where it is and what it offers.

It won't guarantee a mention. It does remove guesswork, which makes your information easier to use correctly.

Reviews and reputation still matter

Trust signals don't disappear in AI search. They matter more, because the answer is trying to recommend something reliable.

A steady flow of genuine reviews, consistent business listings and mentions on reputable local sites all help. Ask happy customers for reviews as part of your normal process, not as a one-time push.

A quick checklist for your website

Open your most important service page and check these against it. Most sites miss at least three.

  • The first two sentences answer the main question a buyer would search.
  • The page names your service area and the specific service clearly.
  • There's a short FAQ section with real questions customers ask.
  • Your business name, address and phone match your Google Business Profile exactly.
  • The page loads quickly on a phone.
  • Schema markup describes your business and the service.

Fixing these helps with regular search and AI answers at the same time. You're not choosing one over the other.

What to stop doing

Stop writing for word count. Long, padded pages bury the answer. Say the useful thing first.

Stop chasing tricks. Keyword stuffing and thin pages built only for search tend to backfire.

Stop ignoring your Google Business Profile. It's one of the clearest sources of truth about your business.

How to tell if it's working

Search the questions your customers actually ask and see whether you're cited. Watch your search traffic and, more importantly, your calls and form fills.

Visibility only matters if it turns into customers. Track it all the way to revenue.

Quick answers

Can I pay to be in an AI Overview? No. The AI summary draws on organic sources, so the work is making your site clear, accurate and trustworthy.

Does regular SEO still matter? Yes. The same fundamentals that help you rank also help you get cited.

How long does it take to show up? It varies by competition and how much needs fixing. Clean up the basics first, then build content that answers real questions.
